Normandy, July 2009

In July I’ve taken a short break in Normandy. Which is something completely different from my usual trips (being: the mountains).

Normandy is not only a coast (with beaches, sea, boats, etc…). It’s even more ‘History’ (with a capital H). The Normandy Landing is ubiquitous. In several places you can visit old bunkers, in the neighbourhood of Arromanches you can still clearly see – after sixty five years – the artificial harbour the British have created near the coast.

And then there are the military cemeteries… The biggest one is ‘Normandy American Cemetery’, near St. Laurent-sur-Mer and with a view on Omaha Beach. This cemetery is huge, even gigantic… In total nearly 10.000 fallen Americans…
