2011 In Focus

[See image gallery at www.thelightpoet.be] Today it is the 31th of December, according to our calendar the year has come to an end. It’s a time for everybody to stop and look back and – hopefully – see that everything was good. A time to be grateful for the beautiful moments and to draw wise lessons from the less beautifull. With thanks for what we have instead of grieve and jealousy for what we don’t have.

One of the most difficult tasks each year for me is to make a reasonable selection of the thousands of images I shoot. This year I ended up with a selection of 36, photos that I kind of like and maybe even bring a moment of joy, of inspiration to you. And that’s the reason for my photo blog: to bring a moment of joy, of inspiration to others.

And of course my best wishes for 2012!

Winter Wonders (Brussels), December 2011

[See image gallery at www.thelightpoet.be] This time of the year there are all kinds of activities, e.g. in Brussels. There it is called ‘Winter Wonders’. The past WE I went there, to see enlighted figures, strange animals in a carroussel (Le Manège d’Andréa) and people enjoying ice scating.

Snow, December 2011

[See image gallery at www.thelightpoet.be] Usually I’m somewhere in the Alps this time of the year, for a hiking trip on snow shoes. But due to lack of snow (and trips), this year I’m going to spend my vacation at home. This WE it snowed in the Ardennes, so yesterday I went to the ‘Haute Fagnes’ for a hiking trip. About 20 cm of fresh snow, a mild freeze, peace and quiet. Who needs more?

Kunst & Vliegwerk, December 2011

[See image gallery at www.thelightpoet.be] I haven’t touched my camera for some time, my job has taken a lot of my private time these last months… But this afternoon there was an interesting event: the party of Kunst & Vliegwerk in Antwerp (I’m not sure how I could translate that). With the “Carrousel de l’imaginarium du Capitain Gustav II” and a performance of Sentimento Verde.

Zoo Dark, October 2011

[See image gallery at www.thelightpoet.be] It is an unique opportunity: visiting a Zoo after hours. At the occasion of Antwerp European Capital of Youth 2011 the Zoo of Antwerp was exceptionally open after dark. And this way we could get some insight in what is happening at the zoo after it’s closed. And e.g. we could see that one of the guards was distributing teddy bears (picture 2), yes, even the animals at the zoo prefer to sleap with a teddy bear…

Bike Polo, September 2011

9/11 in Chicago, September 2011

[See image gallery at www.thelightpoet.be] Ten years ago, on that September the eleventh, I was also here. I should have flown back to Belgium that day. Which didn’t happen of course. Eventually I could fly back three days later, with one of the first flights that could depart. Those three extra days are the most unreal of my live…

My body is still somewhat on European time (it was only my second night here), so I was awake quite early. Just before sunrise I went for a walk, to Millenium Park, to make some pictures of ‘cloud gate’ (aka ‘the bean’). A nice piece of art and on a day like this, you can even see a deeper meaning to it: our view on the world can be quite twisted…

It is being said that timing is everything, but that’s not true: when I was taking pictures at sunrise, I certainly wasn’t the only one. Some had much more (and maybe even better) equipment with them. But they didn’t see what was going on… They positioned themselves in a certain spot and waited for something to happen. Therefor they missed e.g. the ‘double sunrise’ in picture #12… None of the other photographers saw this, none made a picture of it. Their timing might have been right, but they didn’t have an eye for all the photo opportunities. That’s a shame.

The last evening of my visit to Chicago, I went back to the bean, to take some pictures when the sun was setting.

BTW: since this was a business trip, I only had my NEX5 with me (with the CZ16-80 mounted on it), not the A900 that I usually drag with me.
