The Fortress of Breendonk, December 2010

This afternoon I paid a visit to the Fortress of Breendonk, a place with some black pages. During World War II it was a transit camp, on the way to the concentration camps in Germany. With personal stories that are shown, this part of history comes really close. It is almost unbelievable what people can do to eachother, often guided by their own truth. And sometimes by pure opportunisme.

PS: the text of the neon light in picture 9: “Die Unterbringung der Lagerinsassen in den Kasematten des Forts ist eng, aber erträglich.”
